The Paris Principles were adopted by the United Nations
General Assembly, on 20 December 1993.
Since then, the UN calls on every Member State to
establish a national human rights institution (NHRI) that is compliant with the
NHRIs are reviewed periodically through an
international accreditation process, to ensure their independence, pluralism,
effectiveness and accountability in line with the Paris Principles.

The Manual sets out the accreditation process and highlights
the work of the Sub Committee on Accreditation in reviewing NHRIs from all
regions of the world.
